Denmark, a country full of happy students; we wanted to directly experience and observe the country’s education culture and sociability, the cultural background based on which such unique system has been established, and the cultural environment based on which such system has been conserved and developed. Wish School, which had been running in Asan Foundation’s Asan Sanghoe, happened to meet Leo of the Asan Foundation who had studied abroad in Denmark, from whom we were able to receive advice and contact schools in Denmark to visit.
학생이 행복한 나라 덴마크, 그곳의 교육 문화와 사회성을 살펴보고, 그 독특한 시스템이 어떤 문화배경에서 형성되었는지, 어떤 사회 환경에서 그 체제가 유지되고 발달해 왔는지 직접 경험하고 확인하고 싶었습니다. 또한 그것이 우리가 만들어가려고 하는 위시스쿨 교육현장에서 접목시켜야 하는 점들 또는 개선해야 할 문제들은 어떤 것들이 있는지 알아보고 싶었습니다. 아산문화재단 아산상회를 진행하고 있던 위시스쿨은 때마침 아산나눔재단 리오님이 덴마크로 유학 다녀오신 경험이 있으셔서 조언을 받을 수 있게 되었고 학교들과 연락을 해서 방문할 수 있게 되었습니다.

Q. 어떻게 서로 신뢰하고 안전한 공동체를 만들 수 있는가?
Q. How can we create a safe community full of trust and faith?
A. 가장 중요한 것은 사람의 관계를 유지하는 것이다. 첫 주에 학생들의 핸드폰을 압수하고 온전히 학생들끼리 서로 알아가는 시간을 갖습니다. 2주동안 학생들끼리 깊게 서로를 알아가는 시간을 가집니다. 또한 흥미로운 점은 학생과 교사가 함께 일하고 가족처럼 함께 배우는 것입니다. 학생과 선생님은 동등한 관계로 취급합니다. 학생이 단순히 공부만 하는게 아니라 주방에서 요리사와 함께 음식을 만들고 학생들에게 제공합니다. 이 모든 것이 학생을 한 인격체로 받아들이고 함께 일하고 공부하는 커뮤니티를 형성하는게 안전한 공동체를 만들 수 있는 가장 좋은 방법인 것 같습니다.
A. The most important aspect is to maintain one’s relationship with other people. During the first week, all mobile devices are confiscated from students, and students are allowed time to solely focus on getting to know each other. For the following 2 weeks, students take time to learn about each other even more deeply. Moreover, an interesting fact is that students and instructors work cooperatively throughout the process as if they were members of a family. Students and instructors are treated equally. Students not only study, but also cook food with the chef in the kitchen and provide them to other students. We believe such methods are the most effective way of creating a safe community by accepting students as individual beings and shaping a community where students work and study together in a cooperative manner.
중학교에서 고등학교로 넘어가는 시기 1년을 기숙학교로 지내는 에프터스콜레 기관입니다. 이 학교는 아카데믹한 학습보다 여행을 좋아하고 사회적 그리고 사람을 인격체로 존중하는 기술을 중시하는 학교였는데 자유로움 속에서도 나름 학생들과 선생님들과 규칙안에서 편안하게 학교생활을 즐기는 학생들을 볼 수 있었습니다. 이 학교에서 가장 인상적이었던 부분은 국제학교이지만 영어로 수업하지 않고 덴마크어로 수업하고 있었고 또 국제학생들이 아닌 덴마크 학생들이 수업 받고 있었고 손님들이 오실 때 또는 수업 외에 시간에는 영어로 말하는 등 나름 규칙을 가지고 있었고 가장 인상적이었던 것은 국제적 배경을 가진 선생님을 고용하는 문제였는데 덴마크 아이들을 가르치는 선생님이기 때문에 출신은 중요하지 않지만 덴마크 아이들을 가르쳐야 하는 교사인 만큼 덴마크에서 인정하는 교육기관에서 학업을 마친 선생님이어야지만이 아이들을 가르칠 수 있다고 하셨습니다. 우리나라에서 실력 있는 한국인 선생님들보다 전공도 상관없이 외국 국적 선생님을 무조건적으로 고용하는 실태가 빈번한 것에 비해 너무 본받고 싶은 교육제도였습니다.
EIS is an afterschool program where students spend 1 year in the program as a boarding school during their transition from middle school to high school. Based on our observations, EIS was a school that loves explorations more than academic education and values ways to respect people as individual beings, but we were also able to recognize students students enjoying school life comfortably, even within such freedom, through their own peers, teachers, and rules. The most impressive part of EIS was the international school, even though classes were taught in Danish rather than English, and local students were taking classes. Also, the school had its own rules, such as speaking English when guests speakers came or during times outside of class. Another interesting thing was the issues with hiring instructors with an international background: although the background of the instructors did not matter as they teached local students, at the same time, since teachers were to teach Danish children, only teachers who have completed their studies at an educational institution recognized in Denmark were allowed teach at EIS. This was an education system that I really wanted to emulate, considering that in South Korea, foreign teachers are often hired unconditionally, regardless of major, whereas many skilled Korean teachers are not.
