2022년 2월에 남북사랑학교 초등학교 과정이 개설되어서 기초 영어 수업과 스토리 수업이 시작되었어요.
제3국에서 온 탈북 청소년들과 한국 내 탈북2세 청소년들이 대부분이었는데요.
1학년부터 중학교 과정 친구들 거의 모두가 영어를 알파벳 이름 정도만 알고 있는 기초레벨이었습니다.
영어 학습에 대한 막연한 두려움과 학습을 거부했던 친구들도 있었어요.
On February 2022, the Elementary School curriculum was opened at South-North Love School, and we were able to hold basic English lessons and story lessons. The majority of students in these classes were North Korean defectors coming from a 3rd country or defector children within South Korea. Nearly every student from first grade to those in the Middle School curriculum was at the most basic level of English, knowing only the alphabet. In fact, some students had a simple reluctance or concern about studying a foreign language as well as those who actually refused to learn.
아픈 가족사를 가지고 학기 초에 수업에 적응하기 힘들어했던 친구의 생일 파티를 영어수업으로 진행했었는데요. 평생에 생일 파티를 해본 적이 없다며 안 하겠다고 한 친구였어요. 이 학생이 좋아하는 아이스크림 케이크와 선물 그리고 마음 가득 담은 친구들과 선생님들의 손 편지를 전해주었습니다. 그랬더니 아직 7살이라 편지 못쓰는 친구한테 가서 자기 생일이니까 편지 써달라고 하더라구요^^
이 친구는 이 생일날 이후에 마음을 활짝 열고 수업에 매우 열심히 임해서 항상 1등을 달리고 있습니다.
We held a birthday party for a student from our class, who came to meet her current stepmother, as her biological mother divorced her father due to gambling, as a part of the English lesson. At first, she rejected this idea, claiming that she had never had a birthday party in her life. After hearing her story, we brought her a present and her favorite ice cream cake, along with birthday letters from her loving friends and teachers. Once then, she even went to a 7-year-old classmate, who couldn’t yet write sentences, asking if he could write her a birthday letter. Since her birthday this year, she has opened up and worked very hard in class, always scoring first in class.
